A structural drafter on a project basis works with us in Revit, AutoCAD and Rhino, and in Inventor or Grasshopper where the project calls for it. We use Dynamo and Vault to a limited extent. We always work with the latest versions, in our own environment and with our own licences, so you do not need to free up a seat, workstation or server access.

We deliver in DXF, DWG, Revit formats and STEP, and in practice in any common CAD format.

We draft and model. We do not do engineering, so calculations, structural advice and permits stay with you or with the structural engineer you bring in. Everyone who drafts for us has more than ten years of CAD experience, and the core of our team has around twenty-five years of experience combined. We work nationwide and fully remotely from our own office, although you are welcome to visit us. We respond to a new enquiry within 1 to 2 working days.

The repetitive work of a structural drafter

Most of the hours in structural drafting do not go into the special solution but into the repetition around it. A detail sheet that is almost identical for each building section and still needs attention one by one. An openings overview that has to be gone through again after every change from the MEP contractor. A grid floor plan that follows the same pattern over six storeys, each time with a small deviation. That work takes little brainpower and a lot of time, and it is exactly the part that makes a drawing office fall behind schedule.

Revit family with a linked material schedule, built to the client's CAD standard
A smart component with a live material schedule: a change to one part is reflected in the schedule straight away.

We take over that detailing so your own people can stay focused on the connections and the coordination. Our approach starts with an inventory. At the start we ask which components recur in the project, how often and in which variants, and only then do we turn up the volume. That order matters, because an error in the pattern repeats itself as often as the component itself. Where the time savings lie depends on the form of the work.

In a revision round on existing DWG files, the gain lies in reading through the set beforehand, so we know what is already usable. In new work, the gain lies in the set-up: components that adapt rather than components someone redraws every time. And in a peak, the gain simply lies in the number of hands we add. In all three cases we deliver in parts, so you see early on which way things are heading. What we bill is pure working hours, so interruptions do not appear on the timesheet.

Parametric working for the structural drafter

Architecture firms
Three projects under way, and the modelling for the fourth is stalling.
Manufacturers
The product line needs to become smart components, but nobody in-house can be freed up.
Contractors
The as-built dossier needs updating while the drawing office has already moved on to the next job.
Engineering firms
A peak in drafting work that your own team cannot absorb.

In repetitive drafting, a smart component saves more time than any working arrangement. We build parametric Revit families: components that adapt to a new situation or a different size. We make the component once and then place it anywhere without drawing it again. The material schedule follows automatically, so if the component changes, the schedule changes with it. That last point prevents the classic situation in which the drawing is correct but the schedule is one revision behind.

An example from our own work shows how big the difference is. Companies in greenhouse construction often draft entirely in AutoCAD, and AutoCAD is not clever at building up components such as valves in piping systems. If you need a valve in 90 and in 110 there, you redraw it by hand every time. With a smart family, it is in place after a single action. In that kind of work it saves at least seventy per cent of the time, and that gain shows up directly on the timesheet.

We can clean up an existing family library or build a new one. Which is wiser depends on the condition of the existing library. If a set is very messy, with overlapping families or families based on an old template, rebuilding is sometimes faster than repairing. We present that trade-off with our reasoning, after which you choose. If a drawing office deliberately works entirely in AutoCAD, we fit in with that and do not push for a switch.

What a drafter on a project basis delivers with us

01
Introduction and handover
We go through the work and receive the details and drawing conventions.
02
Reply within 1 to 2 working days
With enough information we can start straight away.
03
Delivery in stages
A first part comes back to you, you review it and we collect your feedback.
04
Check-ins at your pace
Every two days when it is urgent, weekly when things are calmer.

The delivered set must be usable without anyone having to call us. That means complete dimensioning, a consistent title block and numbering, a layer structure that matches what you already use, and a material schedule that matches the drawing. We include the source files, not just a PDF, because the intellectual property of everything we make belongs to you. Your own drafter can therefore continue working in it straight away and does not remain dependent on us. Which output makes sense depends on where the set is going. For cost estimating, what matters most is that items can be extracted unambiguously from the schedule. For construction, the detailing and the legibility of dimensions and references matter. We ask about that at the start, because a set that has to be reworked afterwards immediately eats up the benefit of outsourcing.

Before anything leaves our office, it goes through at least three review layers. A drafter draws, a second team member checks that work, Sam, our team leader, then reviews it and Barry, our project manager, checks it last. As a result, errors stay minimal in practice. We deliver in parts, collect feedback, make adjustments and move on to the next part. That way a misunderstood detail surfaces within the first ten drawings and not the last hundred. For standalone drafting, files go back and forth by email. For larger projects we work with software you can log into to follow progress.

Scaling up with drafters on a project basis

With our large, variable team we scale project staffing up or down per project, from one drafter for a small job to as many drafters as needed. The team is already in place, so for us scaling up means deploying, not recruiting, which saves the weeks a recruitment process normally takes. If speed is needed, people join the work straight away. If someone drops out due to illness or holiday, we replace them so the schedule does not slip.

Step 1
Drafter
Creates the model and the drawings.
Step 2
Second team member
Checks the work for structure and dimensions.
Step 3
Sam
Team leader: reviews the technical side of the set.
Final check
Barry
Project manager: gives it a final review before delivery.

Because we record the project agreements rather than leaving them in a drafter's head, such a switch takes little handover time. You have no ongoing payroll costs with us, because no contract keeps running in a month without work.

Case study: Firefly

We charge by the hour or per project at a fixed price, whichever suits the assignment, and we do not work with a prepaid hours card or hours subscription. However large the team, you keep one fixed point of contact. Barry picks up the enquiry and the arrangements, after which Sam takes over the technical side and supervision. As team leader, Sam has more than fifteen years of background in architecture, worked in Iran for seven years, ran his own design practice in the Netherlands and still works as an engineer.

We tell you in advance what is feasible, and we do not promise a delivery time we cannot meet. For a deadline that could not slip, our team did work evenings and weekends, with days of fourteen to fifteen hours. A short assignment is fine, and many clients start with a small first job.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about a structural drafter on a project basis

In terms of content yes, technically no, because we work in our own environment. Our drafters follow your drawing conventions, schedule and meeting rhythm as if they were in-house. What they do not do is log into your network or use one of your licences. That saves admin at the start, especially for a short engagement where setting up accounts is out of proportion.

For standalone work, files go back and forth by email, and on larger projects through software you can log into. We schedule meetings weekly or every two days, depending on the pressure. That keeps the collaboration close to the project without anything having to change in your infrastructure. Discuss in the first conversation how your team would prefer to set this up.

No, we draft and model and do not calculate anything. Calculations, structural advice and permits belong with you or with the structural engineer you bring in for that. We turn the decisions that have been made into drawings and models that match the standard in use. We keep that boundary sharp because it keeps our work predictable and nobody has to guess who is responsible for what.

In practice that matches what our clients ask for, because that expertise is in-house with them. We do think along about how a drawing or a family is set up, because that is our trade. If one of our drafters sees that a detail supplied cannot be drawn as intended, he reports it back. Put your question to us and we will tell you whether it fits within this scope.

We can start as soon as we have enough information to draft without guessing. We respond to a new enquiry within 1 to 2 working days, followed by a conversation in which we go through the project. In that conversation we ask for the details, the existing drawings and the drawing conventions. Once those are available, the first part can get going quickly, because we do not need to recruit anyone or train them in the trade.

What does take time is getting to know your standard, and we do that at the start rather than again for every drafter. If something essential is missing, we say so straight away rather than halfway through. We do not name a date we cannot meet. Call us or use the contact form to set this in motion.

With a temp or freelancer you hire one person; with us you hire a team with review built in. A lone drafter has no second pair of eyes behind them and no replacement when they are ill. With us, every piece of work goes through three review layers and we replace anyone who drops out, so the schedule does not slip. Scaling up differs too: our large, variable team scales with each project without you having to recruit or negotiate again.

On the other hand, we are not physically in your office, because we carry out the work remotely. If you want someone sitting next to you at the table, that is a real consideration. The cost side does stay clean with us, because we only bill pure working hours. Feel free to ask us how that comparison works out for your situation.

Yes, that is often the first thing we pick up. We then assess whether the existing set can be repaired or whether rebuilding would be faster. Families based on an outdated template, that overlap or that are set up differently from the rest cost more time in use than they save. We base our assessment on what we find in the set, after which you decide. If we rebuild, we make the components parametric, so a size variant is placed in a single action and the material schedule follows. If we build on the existing set, we keep the naming and structure in use. The result remains your property, including the source files. Send us part of the library and we will give you our view.

We use material we receive exclusively for the project it was provided for. We work in our own environment with our own licences, so we do not need access to your network. We have not signed a non-disclosure agreement so far, simply because clients have not asked for one. We are open to it, though, and will sign an NDA without fuss. The intellectual property of everything we make belongs to you, including the rights to the delivered set. If you want agreements on publication or use of images, we record them in advance. Feel free to raise that point with your first enquiry. Then it is settled before the work begins.

We only bill pure working hours, and waiting time does not count. If one of our drafters is waiting for information, the clock stops and we pick up other work in the meantime. The same applies if someone steps away for a five-minute coffee. Meetings that move the project forward are part of the work, so we keep them short and focused. We bundle questions and raise them at the next meeting instead of asking them one at a time. That makes the timesheet verifiable for the project lead who has to sign it off. There are no ongoing costs, because no subscription or prepaid hours card is running. Feel free to ask us what one of our timesheets looks like.

Then the agreements stay in place and the staffing adjusts. If we charge by the hour, we bill the extra hours the work actually requires. If we work at a fixed project price and the substance of the assignment changes, we discuss it before continuing to draft, not afterwards on the invoice. If the project runs late because of a peak elsewhere, we add extra drafters so the end date remains achievable.

For a deadline that could not slip, our team worked evenings and weekends to deliver on time. We do not call that standard, but it shows how we handle a commitment. If something is not feasible, we say so in good time rather than letting it drag on. Discuss the schedule in the first conversation, so we know where the room for manoeuvre is.
