When you want to hire a drafter, you are usually choosing between three routes. Bring a freelancer onto the project for a few months, recruit a permanent drafter, or hand the work to an external team. The first route gives you one pair of hands, and those hands get ill, go on holiday or move on to the next job.
The second takes recruitment time and creates an obligation that remains once the peak is over. We are the third route.
Our team is already in place, we deploy what the project needs and scale back down as soon as the volume drops. You pay no ongoing salary costs and keep one fixed point of contact. We draft and model, while engineering stays with the parties appointed for it. The work is carried out remotely from our own office, where we use our own licences. You will hear back from us within 1 to 2 working days of a new request.

What happens after you hire a drafter from us
If you want to hire a drafter from us, you start with a conversation, not a contract. In it we go through the work on the table, the documents available and the agreements that apply within the project. You supply the details, usually together with existing drawings that need a revision. We read through that set first. Only then do we say anything about staffing and pace, because the state of the source material makes the work heavier or lighter than the number of sheets suggests. The work then goes out in stages.
A smart component with a live material schedule: a change to one part is reflected in the schedule straight away.
We deliver a first part, gather feedback, process it and move on to the next part. That sequence keeps any misunderstanding small. If you only look at the end, you discover a wrong assumption across a hundred sheets instead of ten. Before a part goes out, it passes through at least three review layers: a drafter draws it, a second team member checks that work, Sam, our team leader, then reviews it and Barry, our project manager, gives the final assessment.
We match the rhythm of our meetings to the urgency of the project. For work that needs to be done quickly we speak every two days, and for a calmer project a weekly moment is enough. In between, contact runs by email and phone. We visit you or welcome you at our office when a set is better discussed around a table. We process feedback in the live set rather than in a separate final round, so last week's comments are visible in this week's work.
Model in Revit
Built from the documents you supply, consistently to your standard.
Drawings from the model
Floor plans, sections, elevations, details and overviews.
As-built and revisions
Updating existing sets and dossiers that have fallen behind.
Parametric families
Smart components with a material schedule that updates with them.
3D modelling
In Rhino or Inventor, converted to the format your supply chain uses.
Template clean-up
Cleaning up or rebuilding existing families and templates.
Send us your set or model and we will tell you what we can deliver from it.
Three projects under way, and the modelling for the fourth is stalling.
Manufacturers
The product line needs to become smart components, but nobody in-house can be freed up.
Contractors
The as-built dossier needs updating while the drawing office has already moved on to the next job.
Engineering firms
A peak in drafting work that your own team cannot absorb.
Our main software is Revit, AutoCAD and Rhino. We also work with Inventor and Grasshopper, and to a limited extent with Dynamo and Vault. You decide which package leads, not us, because the work has to fit in with what already exists. If the existing set runs in AutoCAD, it stays in AutoCAD and we will not start modelling unasked. If the project runs in Revit, we continue building the model and generate the sheets from it.
We always work with the latest versions and deliver in DXF, DWG, Revit formats and STEP, and in practice in any common CAD format. More important than the package is the way we connect with the existing set. We work to your standard and your drawing conventions, which you provide. That means adopting the layer structure, naming, title blocks and templates already in use. A drafter who brings their own habits delivers a set that is technically correct but does not fit into the archive.
On Revit projects we also look at the families and templates. If the existing set is clogged with variants nobody uses any more, we clean it up or rebuild it. Which is wiser depends on the state of the existing set, because rebuilding a very messy family set is sometimes faster than repairing it. We work in our own environment with our own licences, so there is no need to log in to your systems.
Our own office with our own licences: nothing needs to be set up or released on your side.
No ongoing payroll costs and no idle staff once the peak is over. If one of our people is off sick or on holiday, we replace them and the work simply carries on.
We go through the work and receive the details and drawing conventions.

Check-ins at your pace
Every two days when it is urgent, weekly when things are calmer.
Capacity is the reason behind almost every request. There is too little time, too few drafters, or a peak on the way that the in-house team cannot absorb. Our large, variable team scales with each project, from one drafter for a small job to as many drafters as a large project needs. The team is already in place, so we deploy what the project requires without having to recruit first. When something is urgent we add people immediately, which in practice means a large set is worked through in parallel rather than sheet by sheet. When the volume drops, we take people off again. Absence is the biggest risk with a single hired drafter, and with us that risk lies with us, not with you. If someone is ill or on holiday we replace them so the work carries on, and Sam oversees the handover.
Because the work is set up to the client's standard and several people know the set, a replacement does not have to start from scratch. Every drafter on our team has more than ten years of CAD experience, and the core of the team has roughly twenty-five years of experience combined. Sam has more than fifteen years of background in architecture, ran his own design practice in the Netherlands, still works as an engineer and leads the CAD team on a daily basis. When a deadline on one project could not move, the team worked through evenings and weekends with days of fourteen to fifteen hours, including during a planned holiday of Sam's.
Your fixed points of contact
Project manager Barry leads the first conversation, team leader Sam keeps a firm grip on the technical side
You never have to explain the situation all over again. Getting acquainted takes a short fifteen-minute call.
To get started, we mainly need information about the content of the work. That begins with the project details and the existing drawings we will be building on. We also want to know which CAD standards apply, which version of a set is leading and in which formats the delivery should be made. If there is a date that cannot move, we would rather hear it in the first conversation than halfway through.
Step 1
Drafter
Creates the model and the drawings.
Step 2
Second team member
Checks the work for structure and dimensions.
Step 3
Sam
Team leader: reviews the technical side of the set.
Final check
Barry
Project manager: gives it a final review before delivery.
With enough information we can start straight away. We respond to a new request within 1 to 2 working days, after which Barry picks up the request and Sam takes over the technical side. A short assignment is fine, and for a first collaboration it is often the sensible choice.
Case study: Firefly
We then start with a small package of drawings so you can judge our speed and accuracy without handing over the entire volume at once. If you are happy, more drafters join the project. We do not work with prepaid hour bundles or a monthly hours subscription, so no capacity is bought in advance. The intellectual property of everything we create belongs to you, including the families and templates developed along the way.
So far we have not signed a non-disclosure agreement because clients have not asked for one, but we are open to it and will arrange it before the first files are exchanged. You can reach us by phone or through the contact form on the website, followed by a conversation in which we go through the project. If you are considering whether to hire a drafter, that gives you a concrete picture of what is possible within a few days.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions about hiring a drafter
You can pay by the hour or a fixed price per project, and we decide on that together. A clearly defined set with a clear scope suits a fixed project price, while an ongoing project with changing revisions is better suited to an hourly basis. We only ever bill net working hours, so time not spent on the drafting does not appear on the invoice. We do not publish prices on the website, because every set is put together differently and the state of the source material largely determines the number of hours.
There are no ongoing salary costs and no recruitment costs. We do not offer prepaid hour bundles or subscriptions either. In the first conversation, once we have seen the documents, it quickly becomes clear which option makes sense. That conversation costs nothing and commits you to nothing.
We have a large, variable team, so staffing scales per project with what the work requires. We decide on the right number based on the volume, the degree of repetition and the lead time you need. With a set containing many similar sheets, it pays to have several people working in parallel. For a revision round on one coherent file, a smaller crew is often better, because coordination would otherwise take more time than the drafting.
If it is urgent, we add people immediately because the team is already there. Recruiting or training people in the trade itself is therefore not an issue. When the volume drops, we bring the staffing back down again. That flexibility is exactly why clients come to us.
No, the work is done in our own environment with our own licences. You therefore do not need to free up workstations, licences or access rights. What we do adopt is your standard and your drawing conventions, so the delivered set fits with what is already in your archive. For standalone AutoCAD drafting, files are exchanged by email. For a larger project, such as a greenhouse construction project, we use software that you can log in to yourself to follow the project. We make that choice at the start, depending on the size of the work. The impact on your own IT management therefore remains limited. We agree on this way of exchanging files in the intake meeting.
That depends on whether your workload is structural or comes in peaks. If there is a constant flow of drafting work all year round, a permanent employee is easy to justify. If it is a peak, a project that happens to coincide with others or a file that has been left sitting, hiring in is a better fit. Recruitment takes time you do not have at such a moment, and the obligation remains after the peak.
With us, staffing moves with the workload and you pay no ongoing salary costs. The risk of illness and holidays also lies with us, because we arrange cover internally. For work that requires engineering or calculations, you stay with your own people. A conversation about your specific situation usually clarifies that decision quickly.
We work to the standard and drawing conventions you give us. At the start of a project we go through the layer structure, naming, title blocks and templates. If they are recorded in a document, we follow that document. If there is no such document, we derive the setup from the existing set and present our interpretation to you for confirmation.
During the work, a second team member checks that the setup has been applied consistently, and Sam, our team leader, reviews that as well. This keeps the set uniform, even when several drafters are working on it. If the standard changes along the way, we apply it in the current part rather than only in the final round. We would rather flag deviations straight away than afterwards.
Every piece of work passes through at least three review layers before it goes to you. A drafter draws it, a second team member checks that work, Sam then reviews it as team leader and Barry, our project manager, gives the final assessment. That route is fixed, whether it is a single revision sheet or a set of hundreds of drawings. As a result, the number of errors stays low in practice.
Sam leads the CAD team and is responsible for the technical side, so the reviews are done with real subject knowledge. For you, it means your own project leader does not have to act as a proofreader. We also deliver in stages, so any deviation becomes visible early. Anything that still slips through, we fix in the live set.
Yes, scaling up during an ongoing project is possible and happens regularly. Because the team is already in place, we do not need to recruit anyone when demand increases. An extra drafter works to the standard that has already been set, so onboarding is limited to the project itself. Sam divides the work so that the new capacity takes on a clearly defined part. That prevents several people from working in the same sheets at once. The reverse is possible too, because after the peak we scale the staffing back down. You are therefore not tied to capacity you no longer need. A phone call is enough to get that started.
We need the project details and the drawings that already exist. It also helps to know which standard applies, which version is leading and in which format the delivery should be made. If there is a fixed date, we include it in the planning straight away. With that information we can estimate the volume, the amount of rework and the staffing needed. If material is missing, we specify exactly what we lack instead of adding a margin to cover it. You will receive a response to your request within 1 to 2 working days. We can start as soon as the information is complete enough to set up the work properly. You can get in touch by phone or through the contact form on the website.
