If you want to hire a Rhino specialist, the question usually starts with volume: how much repetitive drafting is really in the project, and how often does the same component come back in a slightly different size or shape? At low volumes a single extra drafter is often enough, but as soon as the number of variants climbs, every action that gets done twice adds to the lead time.

We supply drafters with more than ten years of CAD experience who use Rhino every day, alongside Revit, AutoCAD, Inventor and Grasshopper.

Our team works remotely from our own office, with our own licences and the latest software versions, while you simply keep working in your own environment. Our capacity adapts to the project, from a single drafter to a team that grows with the size of the job. If you notice that a job keeps bringing the same repetition, mention it in the first conversation so we can tailor our approach to it straight away.

What a Rhino specialist delivers for you

When you hire a Rhino specialist from us, you do not get loose hours from an individual drafter but access to a team used to working in Rhino on a wide range of assignments. We deliver 2D drafting and, where needed, 3D modelling, supplemented with as-built drawings when an existing object or building has to be recorded first, and revisions when a drawing set needs bringing up to the latest state of the project. In practice, we turn a sketch or a set of photos you send us into a working drawing that you can use straight away for the next step in your process.

A smart component with a live material schedule: a change to one part is reflected in the schedule straight away.

For a revision round, we first look at what already exists, so the new drawing ties in with earlier versions instead of sitting next to the archive as a separate document. One example from our practice is a job in which existing drawings had been partly completed by hand and were hard to read, and we worked out the intent ourselves rather than calling the client about it every time.

That fits the way we work: pressing on independently based on what has been supplied, and only coming back to you when a decision is yours to make. We deliver in stages, so you can adjust course before the whole package is finished. That way our Rhino specialist is not limited to individual drawings but ties into the bigger picture of the project you are working on.

Software, versions and file formats when you hire a Rhino specialist

Architecture firms
Three projects under way, and the modelling for the fourth is stalling.
Manufacturers
The product line needs to become smart components, but nobody in-house can be freed up.
Contractors
The as-built dossier needs updating while the drawing office has already moved on to the next job.
Engineering firms
A peak in drafting work that your own team cannot absorb.

The decision to hire a Rhino specialist is often linked to the software your own firm already uses and whether an external team can plug into it without hassle. We use Rhino as our main software alongside Revit and AutoCAD, and we also use Inventor and Grasshopper when a project calls for them, with Dynamo and Vault to a limited extent. We always work with the latest versions, so no compatibility problems arise when we send a file back to you.

We exchange files in DXF, DWG, the common Revit formats or STEP, and in practice in almost any common CAD format a client supplies. That matters most when a firm works with several packages at once, for example Rhino for design and AutoCAD for construction drawings, where files have to move cleanly from one package to the other. We work in our own environment with our own licences, not in yours, which means no time is lost setting up access or installing software on your side.

For Grasshopper, we align scripts and definitions with what you already use, so a parametric model works not only for us but also when it comes back to your own office. That way our Rhino specialist never works in a different software landscape from the rest of the project team, which would otherwise cause extra delay instead of the time savings you are after.

Every firm has its own CAD standards, with a fixed layer structure, naming and agreements on how a drawing is built up. If you bring in an external drafting team, you do not want the new drawings to look different from the rest of your archive. That is why we ask about your existing drawing conventions at the start and follow them strictly, instead of imposing our own standard. This applies to the layer structure in Rhino, the naming of components and the way a material schedule or legend is put together. For a revision round on existing drawings, this means the new version fits within the same structure as the old one, so a project lead leafing through the file does not run into a break in style or structure. Our work goes through at least three review layers, in which we also check whether the standard has been applied consistently, not just whether the drawing is correct in content.

That is exactly the kind of check that is often missing with a single freelancer, because nobody else looks at a drawing before it goes back to the client. If you change the standard during the project, for instance because your own client has different requirements, we include that in the next partial delivery. We discuss this by email, phone or a short call, at a rhythm that differs from client to client. That way the CAD standard never becomes a recurring point of discussion but a fixed given that our whole team works to from the first drawing, even when the staffing changes during the project.

What the delivered set from a Rhino specialist contains

Hiring a Rhino specialist ultimately produces a set that has to end up somewhere in your downstream process, and how well it connects often determines whether the job feels like a success. We tailor the delivered set to what happens with it next, whether that is further engineering at another firm, construction on site or processing in a larger model.

Step 1
Drafter
Creates the model and the drawings.
Step 2
Second team member
Checks the work for structure and dimensions.
Step 3
Sam
Team leader: reviews the technical side of the set.
Final check
Barry
Project manager: gives it a final review before delivery.

We supply the files in the format you specify, whether DWG, DXF, a Revit format or STEP, so no extra conversion round is needed before the next team can continue. On larger projects, such as greenhouse construction projects with a lot of pipework, we deliver through software in which you can follow progress yourself, rather than only at final handover.

Case study: Firefly

For more loosely structured AutoCAD or Rhino drafting, we deliver by email, in stages that match the rhythm of the project. Every partial delivery goes through the same review layers as the rest of our work, so even an interim package has already been checked before it reaches you. That prevents a major correction round being needed at the end of the job after all.

The intellectual property of the set lies with you, so you can use the files freely in your own downstream process, whether internally or with another party. If you are unsure whether our set will fit a specific software package further down the chain, discuss it with us in advance so we can match the format and structure to it straight away.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about hiring a Rhino specialist

A hired Rhino specialist delivers drafting and modelling work that fits your project, from 2D drawings to 3D models. Where needed, we add as-built drawings and revisions, for example when an existing object has to be recorded first. It is always drafting work, not engineering, so we do not do calculations or give structural advice. We deliver the output in stages, so you can review it and adjust course along the way.

Each stage first goes through our internal review, from the drafter to Sam, our team leader, and Barry, our project manager. That way no unchecked work ever reaches you. The scope of the delivery depends on the agreements we make at the start. We always go through those agreements in the first conversation.

We deliver in the format you specify. Usually that is DXF, DWG, a Revit format or STEP, but in practice we support almost any common CAD format. If you work with several packages at once, tell us which format is needed where, for example STEP for a 3D model and DWG for a construction drawing. We always work with the latest software versions, so a file will not get stuck on an outdated version when it is opened. Files usually go back and forth by email. On a larger, long-running project we also work with software you can log in to. We always agree on the right format at the start of the project. That way nobody has to convert anything afterwards.

Yes, our Rhino specialist works to the CAD standards you supply, not to a fixed set-up of our own. That applies to the layer structure, the naming of components and the way a material schedule is put together. At the start we ask about your existing conventions, together with examples of earlier drawings. That way the new drawing matches your archive, without a break in style.

For a revision round on existing work, we keep the structure of the original unless you tell us otherwise. Checking the standard is part of the fixed review layers every piece of work goes through with us. If the standard changes during the project, we include that in the next partial delivery. Discussion about this simply runs alongside our regular contact.

With repetitive work, the time savings come mainly from components that are drawn by hand again and again. In greenhouse construction, a valve in 90 and in 110 is often drawn out from scratch every time, while a smart, parametric family places that component in a single action. In that kind of work it saves at least seventy per cent of the time. In Rhino we apply the same logic to components that come back in many variants within a project.

By using smart components or fixed blocks, we do not have to build every variant separately. If the component changes, the related material schedule updates automatically. How much time this saves in concrete terms depends on how much repetition there is in the specific project. We prefer to discuss that using an example from your own files.

Besides Rhino, our main packages are Revit, AutoCAD, Inventor and Grasshopper. We also use Dynamo and Vault to a limited extent, depending on what a project needs. We keep all these packages on the latest version, so no problems arise when files are exchanged. If you work with several software packages at once, this means you do not have to find a different firm for each package. A job that starts in Rhino and continues in AutoCAD stays within our own team. That avoids confusion between different parties about who does which part. We match the combination of software needed to your existing set-up. We do that as early as the first conversation.

Yes, we deploy a Rhino specialist for both 2D drafting and 3D modelling. Which of the two is needed depends on where the project stands at that moment. Early in a project it is more often about a 3D model, and later that shifts to construction drawings for the site or the workshop. Both go through the same review layers with us, from the drafter to Sam as team leader and Barry as project manager.

With a 3D model, we also look at how it connects with existing parametric components, so no work is duplicated. We also build an as-built model of an existing situation, based on the material you supply. We discuss the choice between 2D and 3D in advance. That way our drafters know exactly what the assignment requires of them.

On a larger, long-running project, we deliver through software in which you can follow progress. That is the case, for example, with greenhouse construction projects, where a lot of pipework comes together in one file. For more loosely structured drafting in Rhino or AutoCAD, we usually deliver by email, in stages that match the rhythm of the project. We have already checked every partial delivery before it goes to you, so no unchecked interim result ever lands on your desk.

We agree the rhythm of our contact per client, sometimes every two days and sometimes weekly. When a deadline cannot move, we work outside office hours if necessary. Which delivery method suits best depends on the size and duration of the project. We decide that together at the start.

Yes, our Rhino specialist can join a project that is already under way. At the start we ask for the existing drawings and the current status of the project. We first look at what is already there, before anything new is drawn. That way the next phase follows on from what has already been built up, without a break in style or structure. On a running project with a lot of repetitive work, we can also scale up quickly, because our large, flexible team scales with each project. We respond to a new request within 1 to 2 working days. A short conversation is usually enough to decide how quickly the work can start. We then tailor the first delivery to that straight away.
