When you look for a revision drawings service, it usually comes down to one core question: will the new drawing fully match the situation as it actually is now, rather than the original design? With us the answer is yes, and that starts with the way we work.

A drafter draws, a second team member checks that work, Sam, our team leader, then reviews it and Barry, our project manager, does a final check before we send a drawing. We maintain this structure of at least three review layers because a revision without error checking introduces a new mistake instead of fixing an old one.

We do not work in isolation from you: you first supply the details and usually the existing drawings, after which we deliver in stages and process your feedback. The result is a revision set that is not only technically correct, but also fits what you want to do with it, from archiving to a follow-up project.

A case study: revision drawings for Firefly

Having revision drawings made is exactly the kind of work in which we have already built up practical experience. At Firefly it concerned as-built material whose existing drawings had been printed incorrectly and partly drawn by hand, making the whole thing hard to read and messy. Instead of calling the client about every uncertainty, we worked it out ourselves at the time and still delivered it neatly. That approach says something about how we handle revision work in practice: first we establish what is actually there, and only then do we revise the drawing itself.

Revit family with a linked material schedule, built to the client's CAD standard
A smart component with a live material schedule: a change to one part is reflected in the schedule straight away.

That prevents a revision from simply copying the old errors, just in a tidier form. What we take away from projects like this is above all the importance of independent investigation before we draw. If you send us a revision round on existing DWGs, you do not have to verify every detail yourself before we can start. We flag uncertainties, ask targeted questions where necessary and work out the rest independently. When a deadline could not move, we also worked through evenings and weekends, with days of fourteen to fifteen hours, to complete a revision round on time after all.

We carry that experience into every new revision project: first get the full picture, only then draw, and when the schedule is under pressure add capacity instead of sacrificing quality in the end result. That applies just as much to a single drawing as to a complete file, because our approach does not change with the size of the assignment.

What our revision drawings service delivers

Architecture firms
Three projects under way, and the modelling for the fourth is stalling.
Manufacturers
The product line needs to become smart components, but nobody in-house can be freed up.
Contractors
The as-built dossier needs updating while the drawing office has already moved on to the next job.
Engineering firms
A peak in drafting work that your own team cannot absorb.

Within our revision drawings service we deliver both 2D drafting and, where needed, 3D modelling. In concrete terms, we revise existing floor plans, sections, details and installation schematics, adjusted to the current situation or to changed requirements on your side. On projects where piping systems play a role, such as in greenhouse construction, we also often revise components that keep recurring in the drawing, such as valves in different sizes. Where possible, we build these kinds of components as a parametric Revit family, so a next revision does not have to be done by hand again.

We deliver the result in the file format you use, usually DXF, DWG or a Revit format, and where needed in STEP for components heading into production. Alongside the revised drawing itself, we also update the material schedule when it is part of the model, so both stay aligned. We draft and model; we do not do engineering, so the design and the choices within it remain with you. We do not deliver a complete package in one go, but build up the revision in stages, so you can review it along the way.

That leaves us room to adjust course before the whole file has been revised. If you are weighing up revising in-house against outsourcing, this is exactly the kind of output that lets you judge whether our approach fits your own situation and schedule. Even with a single drawing that urgently needs revising, we apply the same care as with an extensive package, without the lead time increasing unnecessarily.

For us, a revision set is only finished when it is not only technically correct but also immediately usable in your downstream process. That means we deliver the revised drawings in the structure and layout you already use, so they fit into your own archive or project file without extra editing. Where applicable, we also add a revision number or date, so it is always clear which version is current. On larger projects, such as in greenhouse construction, we work in software you can log in to yourself to follow progress, which simplifies the handover to the next stage. For more loosely structured revision work we exchange files by email, with clear partial deliveries so nothing falls through the cracks. The intellectual property of what we deliver lies with you, so you can continue with it without restrictions, whether for archiving, tendering or a next construction phase.

Where the revision touches on components that recur often, such as a pipe route with the same kind of components throughout, we look at whether a parametric set-up will save time in future. That is not needed on every project, but we do take it into account as soon as the file gives reason to. That way our work connects with what still needs to happen after the revision, rather than standing on its own as an isolated result. We also deliver a revision that affects only a small part of a larger file in this way, so the whole stays consistent.

Revision drawings made to your CAD standards

When we make revision drawings, we consider aligning with the existing standard just as important as the content of the drawing being correct. We request your drawing conventions and layer structure before the work begins, and then keep to them throughout the project. That prevents a technically correct revision from still not fitting into the existing archive because layers are named differently or because we use a different layout from the one you normally use.

Step 1
Drafter
Creates the model and the drawings.
Step 2
Second team member
Checks the work for structure and dimensions.
Step 3
Sam
Team leader: reviews the technical side of the set.
Final check
Barry
Project manager: gives it a final review before delivery.

With a set that has been edited by different parties over the years, that standard may since have drifted from what was once agreed.

Case study: Firefly

In that case, we first discuss with you which line to follow for the revision currently on the table. If an existing family set or template has become very messy, rebuilding is sometimes faster than repairing, and we make that call together. We work in our own environment with our own licences, but always deliver in the format you expect. Day-to-day contact about details like these runs by email, phone and meetings, at a rhythm that varies per client from every two days to weekly.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about our revision drawings service

A revision starts from an existing drawing and adjusts it, whereas we build a new drawing from scratch. With a revision, our first job is often to work out what in the material is still correct. That investigation is not needed with a new drawing. At Firefly, for example, it concerned as-built material that had been printed incorrectly and partly drawn by hand. We worked it out ourselves instead of burdening the client with questions. As a result, a revision sometimes takes us more time than a new drawing. Conversely, we are often finished sooner with a revision when the set is well organised. A conversation about the state of the material makes clear in advance what to expect.

If an existing set is messy or incomplete, we first work out what information is actually available. We take the initiative to resolve uncertainties ourselves, instead of consulting you about every detail. At Firefly, this produced a file that reached the client neat and legible despite a messy start. Sometimes it turns out that we can rebuild components faster than we can repair them, for example with a clogged family set.

We make that call based on what turns out faster and more reliable. We deliver the work in stages, so you can check along the way whether our interpretation is correct. That prevents a wrong assumption from spreading through the entire file. A first conversation is the best way to estimate how much investigation is involved.

We usually deliver a revision in the same format as the original, mostly DXF, DWG or a Revit format, unless you want something else. Where components are heading into production, we also use STEP. We always work with the latest versions of AutoCAD, Revit and Rhino, so a file fits your environment without problems. If the original drawing was supplied in an older format, we decide how best to convert it.

We work in our own environment with our own licences, which keeps handover straightforward. Where repeating components occur, we use parametric Revit families so a next revision takes less time. That is especially relevant for piping schematics with the same components in different sizes. A conversation beforehand maps out which format fits best.

With a revision in Revit, the material schedule updates automatically as soon as a component in the model changes, provided we have built the model parametrically. A change to a component is then carried straight through into the related schedule. With drafting in AutoCAD, which handles this kind of set-up less smartly, we check the material schedule by hand after a revision. For repeating components, such as valves in different sizes within a pipe route, a smart Revit family is often our way of speeding this up.

That saves at least seventy per cent of the time compared with drawing them by hand each time. Whether it is worth it depends on how often a component recurs. With a messy family set, we first assess what is faster: cleaning it up or rebuilding it. A conversation about this is part of the intake.

If the schedule is under pressure, we deploy extra capacity straight away so the revision is still finished on time. Our large, flexible team scales with each project. When a deadline could not move, we have previously worked through evenings and weekends, with days of fourteen to fifteen hours. We also kept working during a planned holiday of Sam, our team leader, at the time.

We do not promise that level of effort as standard, but it shows how we handle a tight schedule. If a team member drops out due to illness in the meantime, we replace that person. You pay no ongoing payroll costs for this. A conversation about the deadline beforehand helps us decide in good time how much capacity to deploy.

Every revision goes through at least three review layers with us before we call it final. A drafter carries out the revision, a second team member checks that work, Sam then looks at the technical consistency, and Barry, our project manager, does a final check. With a revision we consider this especially important, because otherwise an error from the old drawing remains unnoticed in the new version. Our layered review means we spot an error like that sooner.

Sam brings more than fifteen years of background in architecture and also still works as an engineer. In practice, this structure keeps the number of errors to a minimum. Barry is usually our first point of contact and stays involved right up to the final check. That way you always deal with the same fixed contact person.

Yes, where you want it, we add a revision number or date to the drawing, so it is clear which version is current. That fits with our agreement to work to your standard. On larger projects we work in software you can log in to and follow the status. For more loosely structured revision work by email, we record version control in the file name. Both approaches are possible, and which suits best depends on the size of the project. Our starting point remains that you never have to guess which version is valid. With a file that has many successive revisions, that is all the more important. A conversation beforehand maps out how best to set up version control.

We charge by the hour or per project at a fixed price, and we decide together which option suits best. If we work by the hour, we only bill productive working hours, without counting breaks. With a fixed project price, the amount is set in advance, which gives clarity once the scope is clear. What mainly keeps costs down is how well organised the existing set you send us is. We do not use prepaid blocks of hours or monthly hours subscriptions. You pay no ongoing payroll costs, not even for temporary extra capacity. A short, clearly defined revision can serve as a first assignment with us. A concrete price only follows after a conversation about the size of the file.
